I live in Mendocino County and this is “our” bridge to “our city.” (Far but the closest big one.)
Your words and his are so moving. Let us Americans quit the petty grievances, be grateful for what we have (!!!!!!) and support Ukraine all the way through to its victory over terrorist, weak (though huge), ridiculous Russia.
A beautiful conversation, and a lovely poem to go with it. And yes, Sergei is very wise. We in the West really do need to remember this. Us continuing our lives is also resistance to muscovy. And it enables us to help more. Especially if we can take the time to maintain our mental health so that we can keep encouraging those who defend their homes against the evil that is muscovy.
Beautiful poem that sparks the imagination and puts me effortlessly into the moment you had with your friend. Seems almost like it belongs in a song with a melody, to me.
What you said about it being our job to make the world a better place for our kids and grandkids is also something I want to shout into the faces of various world leaders that still drag their feet: "Do you want them to live in the shadow of russias corruption and fear? Do you think that we can return to some form of normalcy with that criminal regime if they aren't utterly defeated? No?! Well get to work and stop them in their tracks!".
Thank you, Michael! I agree, I can see it as a song, too. When I was writing this poem, I was listening to the instrumental music. However, I had to turn it off because it was throwing me off the rhythm. I felt like this poem had its own melody, and I could finish it only in silence. It’s interesting that you noticed it!
Yes, I want to shout the same to all those leaders who are supposed to represent us and do the job they are supposed to do. It’s very frustrating.

Thank you, Laurel! Yes, you are absolutely right.
