Decorating Easter eggs is a continuation of ancient traditions that people have practiced since the beginning of time. Across the world, the egg has represented the mystery of life. Many cultures share the myth of the cosmic egg from which our universe began. For thousands of years, eggs have been used in sacred ceremonies, rituals, and celebrations. The oldest decorated eggs were found in South Africa, dating back 60,000 years.
Ukrainian pysanky are among the most extraordinary Easter eggs in the world. The word comes from the Ukrainian verb pysaty, which means to write. Pysanky appeared long before Christianity. Ukrainians used eggs in the ceremonies worshipping the god of the sun and covered them with mystic symbols – written prayers.
Pysanky were believed to hold magical powers and were given as a wish for health, harvest, strength, beauty, and protection against all evil. The intricate drawings made with wax and dye held deep meanings and wisdom, and the techniques were passed from one generation to the next.
The tradition of pysanky exists in several other Eastern European countries. However, in Ukraine, it reached the highest level and became a national treasure. In 2024, UNESCO recognized the art and tradition of Ukrainian pysanky as the intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
