Kyiv, May 2025. Photo by Serhii Novikov

Whenever someone visits Kyiv, they are always told by the locals that they should come back in May and see the blooming chestnuts. May is the month when thousands of chestnut trees around the city start to bloom, and clouds of white and pink flowers envelop the streets. It is, undoubtedly, the most beautiful time to see the Ukrainian capital.

I've been to Kyiv several times in the past, but I’m yet to see my favorite city in its blooming chestnut attire. One of my most cherished dreams is to walk the streets of Kyiv, the home city of my husband, and enjoy the blooming chestnuts and peace.

“Kyiv’s chestnuts,” Volodymyr Sydoruk (1925-1997)

Below, you will find:

  • The fascinating story of how chestnut trees became the symbol of Kyiv;

  • Local legends and Kyiv’s history;

  • Rare historical photos of the city from the past decades;

  • And a photo walk in blooming Kyiv that instantly transfers you to beautiful and heroic Ukraine’s capital!
